How naturopathic medicine can help you conceive, give birth naturally and help you with your newborn’s health
Stress reduces fertility in woman. Results from a study published in October 2018, has shown that higher levels of stress are associated with lower odds of conception for women (1). Sometime a simple stress reduction can greatly affect the chance of becoming pregnant.
Many women turn to In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF); as soon as they give up hope for getting pregnant naturally. IVF is a process of fertilization where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body. This procedure is often time consuming, costly and comes with a lot of pressure on the body.
Acupuncture can improve the chance of getting pregnant naturally and increase the success rate of IVF in many ways. Acupuncture tends to improve the function of the ovaries, regulate the hormone levels, increase the blood flow to the uterus and increase the thickness of the uterine wall; all of which increase the chance of pregnancy. It also decreases stress and keeps the patient more relaxed, further preventing the uterus from contracting. Acupuncture also decrease the chance of miscarriage (2).
Aside from acupuncture, there are dietary protocols and supplements that enhance the chances of fertility once the cause of infertility is identified. Zinc deficiency, for instance, is linked to poor sperm quality, low testosterone levels and increased risk of male infertility (3). For females, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC): a supplement form of cysteine helps with egg quality. Once again, the main cause of infertility such as presence of hormonal dysregulation as in PCOS and history of endometriosis has to be identified before a naturopathic fertility protocol can be set in place.
Once conception occurs, I focus on supporting you to have a healthy pregnancy, and an easy natural delivery. In normal vaginal birth, newborns encounter their mothers’ microbes during the critical first hours. Some of these microbes are beneficial and promote healthy gastro-intestinal development and helps reduce future food sensitivities in new born (4). Naturopathic supports following birth include periodic naturopathic visits for your newborn. As a part of this protocol, I will address common health issues after birth, such as infantile colic and support you with the breast-feeding process. Six months of breast feeding alone, causes newborns to have less antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their gut. Breastfeeding is associated with reduced risk of stroke and diabetes in nursing mothers as well (5).
